3 Landscaping Tips You Need to Know for Your Renovations

A beautiful landscaped yard.

A beautiful landscaped yard.

When a lot of people start renovating and remodeling homes, they often forget that the house isn’t the only thing that needs renovating. While you can do everything in your power to transform a house into something beautiful, it will not attract potential buyers unless you take the time to improve the landscaping too.

This is what I like to call curb appeal. Essentially it is making your house appealing on the outside so people will want to see the inside. You want your buyers and anyone else who visits your house to be stunned by your work, and it all starts with creating a beautiful yard.

Now, that doesn’t mean you have to go crazy with landscaping, but it does mean that you need to pay some attention to how the yard looks and how it can improve the house.

To get the best results without spending your entire budget on landscaping, keep these things in mind.

What’s the Focal Point of Your Yard?

This is an easy question to answer because the focal point is typically right in front of the front door. It may be the area surrounding your porch, or it may be the area around your stoop if you don’t have a large porch or patio. Every so often, you’ll see a yard with multiple focal points—an island of trees, flowers, and shrubs in the yard in addition to landscaping around the front door—but for most houses, you’ll want the landscaping to draw visitors’ eyes to the front door.

Once you’ve determined where your focal point is, you’ll need to decide how you want to attract people to it. A walkway can help, but if you don’t have landscaping around your walkway and nothing at the end of it, it’s going to look a bit bare.

Add Natural Accents

Fortunately, it’s really easy to fix this bare feeling by adding a few natural accents. Shrubs and bushes along the walkway or at the end of it and around the door are always a good addition. If you have a green thumb, you can select seasonal flowers and plant them at different times of the year. If you want to save time and effort, though, you can never go wrong with evergreen bushes that don’t require a lot of maintenance.

Leave Room to Maintain Your Plants

Whether you choose to plant flowers, bushes, or small trees along your walk or to accent the front door, make sure you leave enough room between them so they can grow and you can maintain them easily.

When it comes to landscaping, less is always more. You don’t have to plant plants on every inch of the yard to make it look attractive, and you don’t have to plant overly structured, high-maintenance plants, either. Instead, choose a few hearty shrubs or flowering plants that will add to your curb appeal without taking your time to maintain them.
